While there are many versions describing the body’s energy centers, the most widely accepted version is that of the seven chakras, or revolving energy vortices stacked in a column that spans from the base of the spine to the top of the head. There are also minor chakras in the hands, feet, knees, elbows, palms, fingertips, and shoulders. Literally, any vortex of activity could be called a chakra. It is the seven major chakras that correlate with basic states of consciousness.

The word chakra literally translates as wheel or disk and refers to a spinning sphere of bio-energetic activity emanating from the major nerve ganglia branching forward from the spinal column, located at major branching of the human nervous system, beginning with the base of the spinal column and moving upward.

Chakras are considered to be a touch point or nexus of metaphysical and/or biophysical energy centers of the human body, that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy, vitalize the body and to be associated with interactions of a physical, emotional and mental nature.

In New Age practice and healing arts, each chakra is often associated with a certain color. In various traditions chakras are associated with multiple physiological functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element, and other distinguishing characteristics. They are visualized as lotuses/flowers with a different number of petals in every chakra.  The function of the chakras is to spin and draw in this energy to keep the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical health of the body in balance. The chakras are integrated and working together energetically.  Chakra blockages are an imbalance of your energy in terms of flowing too fast or too slow. Negative thinking, a trauma, a change in environment, subtle energies, such as someone else's emotions and unseen energies, enter your aura through the chakra openings, distribute and affect your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.  Your chakras lose their vibrancy, become muddied and out of balance. You can become lethargic, unmotivated, depressed, unenergetic, scattered, unbalanced or can manifest as an illness.
