THE FOUR ELEMENTS AND WHAT THEY REPRESENT
The elements represent your fundamental qualities and
temperament. All four elements are necessary to live a balanced and fulfilling
life.
We often attract people into our lives who
are strong in our weak elements, and vice versa.
In your own birth chart, the mix of elements shows you what
you're working with in this life. Your cosmic blueprint may be elementally
balanced or for example, heavy on the fire, but lack earth to ground you. Each
element behaves differently, and is one of three qualities -- how they mix in
your chart, taking into account the planet and house placement, shines more
light on your nature and life lessons.
Through time, many traditions honor the sacred circle, formed by
the four elements, and seen in the Zodiacal wheel. The four elements -- earth, air, water and
fire -- are the energies or elements of life. Since long before written
history, there's been an understanding of the elemental balance needed to
sustain all life.
FIRE Signs: the spirit,

The Qualities or modes are CARDINAL, FIXED AND MUTABLE and the twelve
signs of the zodiac are grouped into them based on how the sign behaves. Each
element has one of each of the "qualities." The quality groupings
each have a unique way of engaging with the world. Each grouping, by quality,
has one of the four elements. So that means that for each element, there is a
Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable sign within that group. Each quality is linked to a particular point
within the seasons.
CARDINAL SIGNS
The Cardinal signs initiate the outset of the seasons, ARIES (Spring), CANCER (Summer), LIBRA (Fall) and CAPRICORN
(Winter), and often set the tone. They're the kick off, and come across as
active initiators of each time of year.
Cardinal quality is initiating but does not necessarily follow through
or finish.
Cardinal Fire (Aries) is a catalyst, inspiring others by
being totally committed to his/her own vision.
Cardinal Water (Cancer) leads by the heart, and casts a
palpable emotional force that pushes into new territory, but does it sideways
like the crab.
Cardinal Air (Libra) initiates through new ideas, and by
being a balancing force among people. From being masters of the physical plane,
Cardinal Earth (Capricorn) has a formidable, grounded
presence, and a natural authority.

FIXED SIGNS
Fixed signs fall in the middle of the seasons (TAURUS, LEO,
SCORPIO, AQUARIUS) often steady and stable, fixing in
place and holding in continuation of what's begun. They are able to engage in
sustained activity over a long period.
They represent going deeper, and pursuing the full realization
of what's already begun and maintaining. Although they can initiate, their true
gifts emerge when able to sink deeply into an ongoing project and are models of
solo productivity.
For Fixed Earth (Taurus) digs into the earth, builds with real
elements to construct a solid life.
For Fixed Fire (Leo) this can mean a career of self-expression,
and ongoing respect in their chosen fields.
For Fixed Water (Scorpio), permanence is found through
achievement, and going deep into the timeless mysteries of the imagination,
dreams, primal sexuality.
As Fixed Air (Aquarius) fixes on a continuum that reaches into
the future, and can doggedly push for reform, or spend a lifetime on their
personal inventions.
Although the gift of fixed signs is that they can stick with
something to the end, it's hard for them to let go, even when something appears
to be a lost cause. Not known for their flexibility, they have a harder time
with change than the other qualities. At their worst, they can be dogmatic,
rigid, stubborn, and petulant. Usually, there's a mix of qualities in a birth
chart, so nobody has to bear the weight of all those negative traits. TOP
MUTABLE SIGNS
Mutable signs are the chameleons of each element, able to shift
into many forms, and taking on different personas. Mutable signs have a restless nature that
comes from being the breakdown before the breakthrough -- in preparation for
the end of the season. Their adaptability makes them light on their feet in a
crisis, traveling well in and among different types of people, exchanging ideas
on what to do next. With quickly evolving natures, they thrive on change,
understand change intimately, and are at home in chaos. Their swift changeability allows them to see
life from many different perspectives and bring people and ideas together in an
innovative synthesis.
Each of the Mutable signs mutates itself with the tools of its
particular element. Mutable signs
experience the sense of multiple selves, and sometimes struggle to feel real
and solid within themselves. Their sense of identity
is loose, and like a kaleidoscope, always changing. But over time, a core sense
of self emerges, based on this changeability, but transcending it, too.
Mutable Air (Gemini) rides the circuits of ideas, taking in and
disseminating what it collects.
Mutable Earth (Virgo) changes through purification of the body
and by being a force of healing for others.
Mutable Fire (Sagittarius) evolves through learning, travel,
seeking knowledge -- and using intuition to glean the truth from all this
experience.
Mutable Water (Pisces) dwells in the collective depths, and
contains all the signs as the last one.
